Making Accessibility Accessible
Thursday, November 9th, 14.30
Category: Beginner
Track: Technology
The developed world is ageing, with the Baby Boomers in their 60s and a declining population. With the reduced dexterity and vision of people working beyond the age of 65, accessibility is becoming a bigger driver than ever before - whether at the workplace or outside. Accessibility issues have higher awareness, but often still not implemented well, with effort and cost as common excuses. Are these just excuses?
Learn how you can make a difference by simple and low cost changes to your sites by carefully prioritizing the aspects of accessibility you wish to support.
The session will highlight the conflict of accessibility with security. Modern UI technologies and the synergies with mobile Internet will also be covered.
In addition, we will discuss how inherent nature of technical accessibility opens up interesting areas of machine readability, and indexing of non-textual content.
Salient points:
- Multi-media accessibility and how working on accessibility solves, and has been solving, real life problems (like video subtitles used at public places or when your spouse is sleeping), and how accessibility technologies may help search of multi-media content.
- We are talking about the current - not future - need for accessibility.
- We will present the real priorities for accessibility guidelines, based on the impact they make. Along the way, we will discuss how these are different to priorities set by W3C.
- Whether the latest trends and development in UI technology, mobile technology and security aid or pose additional challenges (including AJAX, Flash, Keyloggers and 3G smartphones).
- Why some sites find it easy to implement most of the above at a very low cost, and how some sites fare better than the rest.
Joint session with case presented by Roeland Hofkens from Amplexor.
