Tutorial 1A: Classifying web content with metadata. How and why?

Tuesday, November 7th, 9.00

Room: 5/6

Like in real life, people on the web want specific answers to their specific questions. While searching, the lack of context on content results in lots of recall but lousy precision. Classifying content with metadata can solve this problem, but it's not an easy task.

This tutorial will explain the ins and outs of metadata (e.g. Dublin Core), taxonomies, thesauri, and give an introduction to ontologies. Erik Hartman will present examples of web government sites which use this method of classification, and provide the audience with URL's of several helpful online resources.

Please email Erik your ideas, questions, experiences, and examples, so he can make this a tutorial that answers your specific questions.
